Pensieri e confidenze di Susan Mallery su "A piedi nudi nell'erba"

Carissimi lettori, eccovi alcune domande che Susan Mallery ha rilasciato al pubblico americano nelle sue conferenze. Ho cercato di contattarla, ma purtroppo è impegnatissima della scrittura del seguito di  "A piedi nudi nell'erba" per cui non è al momento raggiunbile nel suo eremo dorato circondata da muse (tra l'altro, che bella immagine, e che bel posto!).

Vi lascio dunque alle parole e alle immagini che Susan Mallery ci ha regalato in questa intervista!!

1. Quali sono i temi principali di questa storia? In quale modo il titolo supporta questi temi? Spieghi i suoi pensieri al riguardo.

Un tema che torna più e più volte nei miei libri è "cercare famiglia." Non siamo tutti abbastanza fortunati da essere nati nella famiglia che abbiamo bisogno, ma siamo in grado di creare una famiglia, di circondarci di supporto, amorevoli amici. In “A piedi nudi nell'erba”, un commento lanciato là di Sam a Carly fa capire che, in un certo senso, lei e Michelle sono sorelle. E in un certo senso, lo sono sempre state, anche prima che i loro genitori si sposassero. Quando erano bambine, quando correvano in giro per l'isola a piedi nudi e spensierate, sono state ​ vicino come sorelle.

Attraverso le vicende della storia, riconquistano tale connessione. Anche se non si può mai tornare all’innocenza di quei giorni a piedi nudi, possono essere ancora più vicine di quanto non fossero allora.

Anche se adoro entrambe le eroine, vedo “A piedi nudi nell'erba” in primo luogo come la storia di Michelle. Michelle doveva crescere maggiormente, superare il dolore. Ora non voglio entrare nei dettagli della storia, ma vi parlerò brevemente di uno: Quando lei adotta Chance. Jared aveva capito esattamente cosa Michelle avesse bisogno distrarsi dai propri pensieri verso negativi - aveva bisogno di incontrare qualcuno ancora più danneggiato di lei. I cani sentono le emozioni nelle loro forme più pure. Non ci sono zone d'ombra. Sapete quando un cane è felice. Nulla corrisponde alla forza dell'amore puro negli occhi di un cane, ma il povero Chance aveva sperimentato solo il peggio che il mondo aveva da offrire: abuso, negligenza, fame. Chance aveva bisogno di qualcuno che fosse un passo avanti e gli dimostrasse che lui era al sicuro. Nel salvare Chance, Michelle salva anche se stessa.

3. Susan Mallery è ampiamente lodata per evocare forti emozioni con i suoi libri. Quali momenti di “A piedi nudi nell'erba” stimolano le Sue emozioni più forti? La fine la soddisfa, o avrebbe voluto che la storia avesse un finale diverso?

La storia si conclude nel modo in cui ho pensato che dovrebbe dovuto concludersi J!

4. Si è sentita maggiormente connessa con Carly o Michelle? Perchè?

In modi diversi, mi sono relazionata con entrambe. Mi piace il sarcastico senso dell’umorismo di MicheIIe. Nulla è più divertente per me che una donna scorbutica. Ma mi sento si direi che io sono più come Carly, in termini di nutrimento. Una grande parte della mia personalità è che volere assicurarsi che tutto quello amo sia curato, e sono certa di vedere questo anche in Carly.

5. Perché pensi che Michelle fosse così arrabbiata con Carly La prima volta che ritorna? Secondo Carly, lei era quella che aveva il diritto di essere arrabbiata. Sei d'accordo? Perché o perché no?

Assolutamente, Carly aveva il diritto di essere arrabbiata, e Michelle lo sapeva. Lei non era pronta ad affrontare la propria coscienza colpevole quando la storia ha avuto inizio. Non solo Michelle deve superare la ricaduta emotiva di ciò che era stata costretta a fare la guerra,ma ha dovuto affrontare il male che aveva fatto a Carly. Immaginate come sarebbe difficile vivere con voi stesse, se foste andata a letto con il fidanzato della vostra migliore amica. Non c'è modo con cui si possa veramente giustificare tale atto. Michelle si sentiva in colpa, ma poiché non riusciva a gestire il senso di colpa, ha tramutato quelle sensazioni in rabbia verso Carly.

6. Il passato di Carly la perseguita. Perché pensi che Carly stia a Blackberry island? Cosa sarebbe successo se si fosse spostata in un'altra città? Perché o perché no? Com’è cambiata da quando faceva le superiori?

Nonostante il trattamento ricevuto da alcune persone Carly ama veramente Blackberry Island, è una parte importante, sente sia il posto migliore per crescere sua figlia. A Blackberry Island, ha un supporto. Amici, la mamma di Michelle, Robert ... Se lei non avesse avuto una figlia, lei potrebbe potuto spostarsi dopo il divorzio, ma, come è successo, tutte le decisioni CarIy sono incentrato su ciò che era meglio per Gabby.

Io sono molto più legata al mio lato creativo di quanto fossi al liceo. Ero una brava studente, ma mi sono concentrata su materie di studio piuttosto che sulle arti. Ho anche preso una laurea in Contabilità al college! (A cosa stavo pensando?)

7. Michelle è stato danneggiato dalla guerra, sia fisicamente che emotivamente. Pensi che i suoi danni emotivi sarebbero stati ridotti se non fosse stata ferita fisicamente? Perché o perché no? Pensi che sarebbe guarito più velocemente? Perché o perché no? Conosci qualcuno che sia stato in guerra?Lei o lui sono tornati cambiati?

Penso che le lesioni fisiche di MichelIe non l’abbiano abbattuta più di tanto. Il danno reale è venuto ricordando quello che era stata costretta a fare durante la guerra .

Ho certamente incontrato persone che sono andate in guerra, ma io non li conoscevo bene, prima o dopo. Io non so come si potrebbe passare attraverso questo e non diventare una persona diversa, in qualche modo. In guerra, si è costretti a confrontarsi con il lato peggiore di quello che noi umani siamo capaci di fare uno all'altro.

8. Cosa ne pensi del caso e Mr. Whiskers? Ha mai conosciuto un cane e gatto che sia diventato un amico? Hai mai salvato un animale?

Amo Chance e Mr. Whiskers! Sapevo che per Michelle fosse necessaria salvare un cane, così ho chiesto al miei fans di Facebook un aiuto per decidere su un mix di razze per compensare questo personaggio canino. Un fan ha postato un’ irresistibile ritratto di un grande cane di razza mista sdraiato su un ponte, con un gattino che gli permette di giocare con la sua coda. Il cane era un vero gigante gentile, proprio quello che mi serviva e non ho potuto resistere a dargli un compagno di giochi, il gattino nel libro. Molto prima che il mio cane Nikki si unisse alla famiglia, ho avuto due gatti che ho salvato e che ho amato profondamente nonostante le tante nevrosi. I gatti erano stati molto arrabbiati quando ho portato a casa un cucciolo. Non sono mai riesciuti ad amarlo, ma sono riusciti a vivere in relativa pace fino a quando i miei gatti sono scomparsi. 1. what are the major themes of this story? how does the title support those themes? explain your thoughts.

One theme I return to time and again in my books is "finding family." We aren’t all lucky enough to be born into the family we need, but we can create a family by surrounding ourselves with supportive, loving friends. In BAREFOOT SEASON, a toss-away comment from Sam makes Carly realize that, in a way, she and Michelle are sisters. And in a way, they always were, even before their parents married each other. When they were little girls, running around the island barefoot and carefree, they were as close as sisters.

Through the events of the story, they recapture that connection. Although they may never return to the innocence of their barefoot clays, they can become even closer than they were back then.

2. what story events caused the characters to change and grow? who changed the most? explain.

Although I adore both heroines, I see BAREFOOT SEASON as primarily Miche|le’s story. Michelle had the most growing to do, the most pain to overcome. I won’t go into all the turning points of the story here, but I will talk briefly about one: When she adopted Chance. Jared had figured out exactly what Michelle needed to pull herself out of her own downward spiraling thoughts - she needed to meet someone even more damaged than she was. Dogs feel emotions in their purest forms. No gray areas. You know when a dog is happy. Nothing matches the power of pure love in a dog’s eyes, But poor Chance had experienced only the worst the world has to offer- abuse, neglect, starvation. Chance needed someone to step forward and show him that he was safe. In rescuing Chance, Michelle rescued herself.

3. author susan mallery is widely lauded for evoking strong reader emotions with her books. which moments in barefoot season triggered the strongest emotions in you? did the ending satisfy you, or do you wish the story would have had a different ending?

The story endedjust the way I thought it should!

4. did you relate most to carly or michelle? why?

In different ways, I relate to them both. I love MicheIIe's sarcastic sense of humor. Nothing is more amusing to me than a crabby woman. But I'd say |’m more like Carly, in terms of my nurturing side. A big part of my personality is that I want to make sure every I love is taken care of, and I certainly see that in Carly, too.

5. why do you think michelle was so angry with carly when she first returned? according to carly, she was the one who had the right to be angry. do you agree? why or why not?

Absolutely, Carly had a right to be angry, and Michelle knew it. She just wasn‘t ready to deal with her own guilty conscience when the story first started. Not only did Michelle have to overcome the emotional fallout of what she’d been forced to do in the war, she had to face the wrong she had done to Carly. Imagine how hard it would be to live with yourself if you slept with your best friend’s fiancé. There’s no way you can truly justify that act. Michelle felt guilty, but because she couIdn‘t handle the guilt, she turned those feelings outward into anger toward Carly.

6. carly’s past haunted her. why do you think carly stayed on blackberry island? would you have moved to a different town? why or why not? how have you changed since high school?

Despite the treatment she received from some people Carly truly loves Blackberry Island, and most importantly, she feels it’s the best place to raise her daughter. On Blackberry Island, she had a support system in place. Friends, Il/lichelIe’s mom, Robert... If she hadn’t had a daughter, she might have considered moving after the divorce, but as it happened, all of CarIy’s decisions centered on what was best for Gabby. I‘m much more connected to my creative side than I was in high school. I was a good student, but I focused on academic subjects rather than the arts. I even majored in Accounting in college! (What was I thinking?)

7. michelle was damaged by the war, both physically and emotionally. Do you think her emotional damage would have been reduced if she hadn’t also been injured rhysically? why or why not? Do you think she would have healed faster? why or why not? Do you know someone wh0 has been to war? did he or she come back a different person?

I think MichelIe’s physical injuries wouIdn’t have thrown her that much. The real damage came from remembering what she had been forced to do inthe war. She couIdn’t get that chiId’s face out of her head, or the feelings of guilt out of her heart. If she had been injured in the ambush, but that was it, I think she would have been gung ho about her rehabilitation and would not have become lost in her self as she was. I clon’t have a close friend or family member who has been to war. I’ve certainly met people who went to war, but I didn’t know them well before or after. I don’t know how you could go through that and not become a different person in some way. In war, you would be forced to confront the worst of what we humans are capable of doing to each other.

8. what did you think of chance and mr. whiskers? have you ever known a dog and cat that became friends? have you rescued an animal?

I love Chance and Mr. Whiskers! I knew that Michelle needed to rescue a dog, so I asked my Facebook fans for help deciding on a mix of breeds to make up this canine character. (Join the fun at www.face- book.com/susanmallery!) One fan posted an irresistible picture of a large, mixed-breed dog lying on a deck, who was allowing a kitten to play with his tail. The dog was a true gentle giant, just what I needed, and I couldn’t resist giving Chance a kitty playmate in the book. Long before my dog Nikki joined the family, I had two rescued cats whom I loved deeply despite their many neuroses. The cats were seriously unamused when I brought home a barky little puppy. They never grew to love her, but they did manage to live in relative peace until my cats passed away. Now Nikki is an only dog.
