In questi tempi di crisi non so voi ma è sempre più difficile compilare la lista dei libri che si vorrebbe e quella - più realistica - di quelli che invece si possono effettivamente comprare. 

Oggi vorrei presentarvi uno di quei libri che rientrano, a mio gusto, in entrambe le categorie di cui sopra e che quindi non esito a proporvi, che dite?

Fatta questa premessa vorrei ora presentarvi la trama, l'intervista all'autrice e il book trailer. Dopo vorrei farvi presente le opinioni (in generale) positive e quelle invece negative dei lettori americani, in modo tale da permettervi di capire se questa lettura potrebbe rientrare nei vostri gusti personali (ma se amate il paranormale e il magico, nonché le vecchie credenze credo che non possa che piacervi!).

Dimenticavo. Se volete sapere se questo romanzo sia una serie o autoconclusivo vi rassicuro dicendovi che è autoconclusivo, ma l'autrice nell'intervista più sotto specificherà qualcosina al riguardo che vi consiglio di leggere ...

In these times of crisis does not know about you but it is increasingly difficult to compile a list of books that you would like and that - more realistic - of those that you can actually buy.

Today I present you one of those books that fall, to my taste, in both categories mentioned above and therefore do not hesitate to offer, you say?

After this  the premise I would like to introduce the story, the interview with the author and the book trailer. After this I want you opinions (generally) positive and negative instead of American readers, so as to let you figure out if this reading may be covered under your personal tastes (but if you love the magic and the paranormal, and I think the old beliefs that it can not that to like!).

I forgot. If you want to know if this novel is a series or reassure you by telling you that it is self-contained self-contained, but the author in the interview below to specify a little something about which I recommend reading ...

Malcolm Doyle vive a Gentry, una cittadina della provincia americana. 

Ma il mondo da cui proviene è un mondo fatto di tunnel e acque buie e profonde, un mondo di esseri spaventosi comandati da una crudele principessa. Malcolm è un sostituto, un essere lasciato nella culla di un bambino rapito sedici anni prima.

Allergico al ferro e al terreno consacrato, Malcolm sta lentamente morendo a contatto con il mondo umano.

Come ti è venuta l’idea per Il sostituto?

Questa è una domanda che mi viene posta spesso e, purtroppo, non ho una buona risposta. Ho pensato per anni e anni di scrivere una storia moderna sul changeling e finalmente, un giorno, ho avuto l’impressione che fosse arrivato il momento giusto per scriverla!

Ci sarà un seguito de Il sostituto?

Ho scritto "Il sostituto" come una storia a sé, ma la cosa non vuol dire che non ci sarà mai un altro libro su Mackie, Tate e Roswell; al momento, però, ho degli altri progetti sui quali lavorare, e non ho idee concrete per un seguito.

Hai avuto alcuna voce in capitolo nel design della copertina per Il sostituto?

Non ho avuto niente a che fare con essa, e non potrei essere più felice! Il fotografo per la copertina degli Stati Uniti è Jonathan Barkat e il progettista è Natalie Sousa. Come si può dire guardando il prodotto finito, sono entrambi sorprendenti.

Da dove viene l’idea per la città di Gentry? È basata su una città reale?

Volevo che GentryI fosse una sorta di ritorno al piccolo villaggio di cui parla Shirley Jackson nel libro La lotteria. Volevo che facesse venire i brividi allo stesso modo. Gentry non è basata su una città reale, ma ha molto in comune con alcuni dei luoghi che ho attraversato quando andato a trovare mia sorella a scuola, in Pennsylvania.

Qual è il tuo gusto preferito?

Blu, blu, perché è delizioso. Tutte le migliori caramelle sono di colore blu-azzurro Pixy Stix, SweeTarts blu, zucchero filato blu. Inoltre, mi piace la cannella. Ma non così tanto come il blu.

A quando il tuo prossimo libro in uscita e di cosa tratta?

Attualmente sto lavorando su un altro libro autoconclusivo, questa volta sui demoni, sul pericolo mortale, l'autodistruzione, e l'amore. Si chiama "The Space Between" e sarà pubblicato da Razorbill quest' autunno. Non ho una copertina ancora, ma l' aggiungerò al sito non appena disponibile! Nel frattempo, il mio blog è sicuramente il posto migliore per rimanere aggiornati, io tendo a postare le ultime mie notizie per prima.

Sei la terza del The Merry Sisters of Fate, dove voi e i vostri partner di critica, a turno, a cadenza settimanale postate brevi racconti. Come hai conosciuto le altre due, Tessa Gratton e Maggie Stiefvater?

Qualche anno fa, Maggie era alla ricerca di partner critica. L'avevo seguita in giro per internet per un po ', quindi sapevo che era molto divertente e mi piacerebbe leggere un paragrafo che aveva condiviso del libro che sarebbe divenuto Shiver, e volevo saperne di più. Così mi sono offerta volontaria e ci siamo divertite, e alla fine, lei mi presentò a Tess. Il blog del gruppo sorto a maggio del 2008 ed è sta andando forte da allora!

Merry Fates è grande, perché è un po 'come praticare in pubblico. Ci fa lavorare sodo su base regolare, ma senza l'impegno a lungo termine di un romanzo. Possiamo essere più sperimentali e prendere più rischi, e se non dovesse funzionare, c'è sempre la prossima volta.

How did you get the idea for The Replacement?
This is a question I get a lot and sadly, I still don’t have a really good answer. I’d been thinking about writing a modern-day changeling story for literally years, and then one day, it just seemed like the perfect time to start writing it!


Is there a sequel to The Replacement?
I wrote The Replacement as a standalone story, which doesn’t mean that there will never be another book about Mackie and Tate and Roswell, but right now, I have a few other projects I’m really excited to work on first, and there aren’t any concrete plans for a sequel.


Did you have any say in the cover design for The Replacement?
I didn’t have a thing to do with it, and I couldn’t be happier! The photographer for the US cover is Jonathan Barkat and the designer is Natalie Sousa. As you can tell from looking at the finished product, they are both amazing.


How did you come up with the fictional town of Gentry? Is it based on a real town?
I wanted Gentry to be kind of a throwback to the little village in Shirley Jackson’s short story The Lottery. I wanted it to have that same really insidious kind of Creepy. While Gentry is definitely not based on a real town, it does have a lot in common geographically with some of the places I drove through when I visited my sister at school in Pennsylvania.


What is your favorite flavor?
Blue, because blue is delicious. All the best candies are blue—blue Pixy Stix, blue SweeTarts, blue cotton candy. Also, I like cinnamon. But not as much as blue.


When is your next book coming out and what is it about?
I’m currently working on another standalone—this time about demons, mortal peril, self-destruction, and falling in love. It’s called The Space Between and will be out from Razorbill this fall. I don’t have a cover yet, but I’ll be adding it to the site as soon as it’s available! In the meantime, my blog is definitely the best place to stay up to date—I tend to post all my latest news there first.


You’re one third of The Merry Sisters of Fate, where you and your critique partners take turns posting weekly short fiction. How did you meet the other two Merry Sisters, Tessa Gratton and Maggie Stiefvater?

A few years ago, Maggie was looking for critique partners. I’d been seeing her around the internet for awhile, so I knew she was really funny and I’d read a paragraph she’d shared of the book that would eventually become Shiver, and I wanted to read more. So I volunteered and we had a good time, and eventually, she introduced me to Tess. The group blog went up in May of 2008 and has been going strong ever since! Merry Fates is great, because it’s kind of like practicing in public. It makes us work hard on a regular basis, but without the long-term commitment of a novel. We can be more experimental and take more risks, and if it doesn’t work out, there’s always next time.

Leggendo un di pareri in giro per il web ho potuto carpire indicativamente quali parti e caratteristiche dellibro fossero piaciute maggiormente e quelle che invece i lettori (almeno quelli americani) hanno trovato meno esaltanti.  Ma andiamo per ordine:

A reading of opinions around the web I was able to steal roughly what parts and features dellibro they liked most and those which readers (at least American ones) have found it less exciting. First things first:

• Pareri favorevoli (che su 5 stelle hanno hanno optato per con 4 o 5 stelle): questi pareri (la maggioranza sul totale) hanno sottolineato il fatto che "Il Sostituto"  si sia distinto da altre letture per la sua originalità, per il fatto che abbia saputo positivamente sorprenderli, ricorrente è la considerazione che il principale punto di forza della storia stia nel suo immaginario e nell' attenzione dell'autrice per i dettagli "alcuni ambienti sono incredibilmente e fortemente immaginifici, tali da trasformare  "Il Sostituto" in un libro da brivido". Libro che unanemente si pone al confine tra il suspance/fairy/horror/paranormal. Infine moltissimi ragazzi e ragazze hanno detto che sebbene l'aspettativa fosse altissima per il romanzo, soprattutto per la copertina (che pare abbia colto perfettamente l'aspetto malefico, la suspense, e l'ambientazione, da far accapponare la pelle,del libro) questo non li ha assolutamente delusi!

• Very good opinion (that of 5 stars have opted for 4 or 5 stars): these opinions (the majority of the total) have stressed the fact that "The Substitute" is to be distinguished from other readings for its originality, the fact that has been able to positively surprise, considering that the applicant is the main strength of the story lies in its imagery and in 'the author's attention to detail "some environments are incredibly strong and imaginative, so as to transform" the Substitute "in a book thrilling ". Unanemente book that is at the boundary between the suspense / fairy / horror / paranormal. Finally, many boys and girls said that although the expectation was high for the novel, both for the cover (which seems to have caught the look perfectly evil, suspense, and the environment, to be creepy, the book) this has not totally disappointed!

• Pareri meno favorevoli (che su 5 stelle hanno votato per 1 o 2 stelle): per questi pareri  - non molti a dire la verità - hanno sottolineato che a loro non è piaciuto il personaggio principale di Malcom e che proprio in ragione di questo la storia non li abbia particolarmente appassionati al romanzo. Altri hanno detto che, a seguito della lettura di altri romanzi simili usciti in America, nel medesimo periodo,  non si siano appassionati ad esso per via del "già sentito"; altri ancora vi hanno letto delle incoerenze verbali di fondo che ne hanno minato la credibilità. In ultimo, altri, pur dicendosi affascinati dalla trama fairy e dello "scambio" che hanno trovato intrigantissima, si sono detti confusi per una trama contorta che li ha confusi non capendo il perché di molti avvenimenti, delle condizioni in cui si viene a trovare il personaggio principale e le reazioni delle figure di contorno... tanto da smettere il romanzo a metà...

L'introduzione alla lettera - e la lettera - che Brenna ha scritto al suo agente letterario perché la pubblicasse.

"Proprio adesso, su Twitter, stavo discutendo delle lettere tramite le quali presentarsi agli agenti e ho pensato che potrebbe essere d’aiuto pubblicare quella che ho inviato io. Per questioni di chiarezza e coerenza, vi devo far notare che Il Sostituto era… beh, io lo chiamavo FE. Che reputavo un titolo eccellente. Più tardi, fui costretta ad ammettere che, se dovevo sempre spiegare la battuta, forse questa non faceva granché ridere.*
Senza perdere altro tempo, ecco la lettera:

Caro, Meraviglioso Agente
Mackie Doyle è lo sporco segreto di cui nessuno parla all’interno della sua famiglia. Tutto quello che vuole è passare per una persona normale – e forse avere un appuntamento con una ragazza – ma sta terminando le spiegazioni convincenti sul perché i suoi occhi diventano neri quando la luce è debole e perché l’odore dell’acciaio lo fa stare male. Come se non bastasse, la sua allergia al ferro sta peggiorando e, nonostante tutti i tentativi di sua sorella di trovare una cura miracolosa, la prognosi non è buona.
Quando incontra una tribù di esseri fatati dall’aspetto raccapricciante che vivono sotto al cumulo di scorie locale, non vuole averci nulla a che fare. Però, quando gli offrono, in cambio di qualche ora a settimana al loro servizio, un intruglio che lo rimette in salute, il prezzo da pagare sembra basso. Ma quello che deve fare non è semplice quanto sembra e presto Macke si trova intrappolato fra due potenti rivali.
Ci sono quindi due clan che rivaleggiano per avere la sua lealtà e, con le vite dei suoi amici e familiari a rischio, Mackie non ha modo di rimanere fuori dalla contesa. Unirsi a qualsiasi delle due parti significherebbe per lui onorare un sacrificio vecchio di secoli, e la soluzione più semplice è quella di versare del sangue. Il problema è che Mackie non pensa di chiedere quanto ne sia necessario.**
Un fantasy contemporaneo per Young Adults di circa 70,000 parole, Fe piacerà ai fan di Holly Black e M.T. Anderson.

The introduction to the letter - and the letter - that Brenna wrote to his literary agent to publish it.

"Right now on Twitter, I was discussing the letters through which present themselves to agents and I thought it might be helpful to publish what I sent myself. For clarity and consistency, I must point out that The Deputy was ... well I would call FE. What I considered an excellent title. Later, I was forced to admit that if I always explain the joke, maybe this was not much laughing. *

Without further ado, here's the letter:

Dear, wonderful agent

Mackie Doyle is the dirty secret that nobody talks about in his family. All he wants is to go for a normal person - and maybe get a date with a girl - but the ending is convincing explanations as to why his eyes get blacks when the light is weak and because the smell makes him sick Steel . What's more, his allergy to iron is getting worse, and despite all attempts to find his sister a miracle cure, the prognosis is not good.

When he meets a tribe of fairies who live in the creepy-looking pile of waste locally, does not want to have anything to do. But when they offer him in exchange for a few hours a week at their service, a concoction that his health, the price seems low. But what we must do is not as simple as it seems Macke and soon finds himself trapped between two powerful rivals.

So there are two rival clans for his loyalty and, with the lives of his friends and family at risk, Mackie has no way to stay out of contention. Join any of the two parties would mean for him to honor a sacrifice that is centuries old, and the simplest solution is to spill blood. The problem is that Mackie did not think to ask how much it is needed. **

A contemporary fantasy for Young Adults about 70.000 words, Fe will appeal to fans of Holly Black and MT Anderson.
