Steampunk che...?

In questi utimi 2/3 anni si sta cercando, con un timido sforzo da parte delle case editrici italiane, di pubblicare uno dei generi più controversi che il panorama letterario abbia conosciuto. Sto parlando del genere Steampunk. Già. Molto spesso infatti si crede che basti traslare congegni ultramoderni, se non fantascientifici, in un'epoca ottocentesca e voilà...Steampunk. Magari !!

Purtroppo non è così facile! Se ci si avvicina al genere cercando si definirlo con parametri lineari e precisi  ci si troverà davanti ad un'impresa difficilissima, almeno quanto stringere in un pugno l'acqua o contare i granelli di sabbia... ho reso l'idea? 

Lo Steampunk vero e proprio risale agli anni ’70 e ’80, come sottogenere della narrativa fantascientifica e ucronistica (riferito ad una spospettazione differente del corso della storia passata) in contrapposizione scherzosa al più celebre Cyberpunk, anche dal punto di vista letterale, ove "Steam" viene sostituito a "cyber" modificandone l'ambientazione e retrocedendola al passato, anzichè al futuro e "punk" si riferisce alla caratteristica dei  protagonisti, che sono generalmente reietti che vivono relegati ai margini della società, talvolta anche criminali, ma anche personaggi storici effettivamente esistiti e "nerd". 

In these last 2/3 years has been trying, with a timid effort by Italian publishers, to publish one of the most controversial genres that the literary world has ever known. I'm talking about the kind steampunk. Already. Very often it is believed that ultra-modern devices just move, if not science fiction in nineteenth-century era and voila ... Steampunk. Maybe!Unfortunately it is not so easy! If you approach the genre is trying to define parameters with accurate linear and we will be faced with very difficult undertaking, as much as shake a fist in the water, or to count the grains of sand ... I get the idea?

Steampunk itself dates back to the '70s and '80s, as a subgenre of science fiction and ucronistica (referring to a different spospettazione the course of the past history) as opposed to the most famous cyberpunk playful, even from the literal point of view, where " Steam "is substituted for" cyber "and retrocedendola changing the setting to the past, instead of the future and" punk "refers to the characteristic of the protagonists, who are outcasts who live generally relegated to the margins of society, sometimes even criminals, but also characters historians actually existed and "nerd".

• K. W. Jeter, che diede anche i natali al genere, 
• con "La Notte dei Morlock" e "Le macchine Infernali"
• James Blaylock con "Homunculus"
• Tim Powers con "Le Porte di Anubis"
• Michael Moorcock con "A Nomad of the Time Streams"  

Prima cosa da sapere sullo Steampunk

Questo fantastico e superbo genere (a mio personalissimo gusto) necessita innanzitutto di una prima fondamentale distinzione dal suo parente più prossimo ed ingombrante: il Cyberpunk. Tralascio in questa sede, per evitare che questo post assumare le dimensioni di un'encilopedia, tutte le altre possibili differenziazioni da altri generi derivati: Dieselpunk (che è riferibile ad opere immagignifiche collocate della metà del Novecento ed ambientate in un mondo analogo allo steampunk, ma caratterizzate dall'ascesa del potere del petrolio e dalla percezione tecnocratica, incorporando elementi neo-noir e condividendo temi più con il cyberpunk che con lo steampunk), Bizzarro fiction (qui gli elementi dominanti sono l'assurdo, la satira, il surrealismo, il nonsens e un certo gusto per il grottesco), New Weird (denomincata così per la deliberata contaminazione di fantasy, fantascienza e horror), Clockpunk (sottogenere del fantasy ambientato in un mondo rinascimentale dove le invenzioni di Leonardo da Vinci sono state non solo costruite e usate, ma anche migliorate), ecc...

A un occhio poco esperto parrebbero esserci poche diferrenze tra Steampunk e Cyberpunk, invece, per gli amanti dei due generi, esiste un vero e proprio abisso.

Lo Steampunk nell'immagiario degli appassionati richiama la meccanica, quella che richiede sudore, fatica e vapore, quella che vede protagonisti i motori meccanici, il grasso, gli ingranaggi, la meccanica in movimento. Ed infatti questo genere si basa su oggetti o invenzioni di tipo meccanico, che richiedano preferibilmente il vapore - steam, come forza propulsiva; l'ambientazione spesso retroagisce nel tempo (ma non è una regola ferrea) - preferibilmente ottocentesca - per narrare storie bislacche, talvolta ironiche, talaltre no, su argomenti più vari ed eventuali che si possano immaginare.
              

Il Cyberpunk si caratterizza, invece, per l'ambientazione futuristica di storie che dipingono una realtà che si prende sul serio, dai risvolti spesso drammatici; si basa su una tecnologia di tipo elettrico, elettronico, comprendente anche la nanotecnologia, la robotica, l' informatica, ecc... Il cyberpunk è una corrente letteraria nata negli anni '80 come sottogenere della fantascienza. Sebbene come stile fosse già conosciutocon Dozois, fu solo nel 1983 che venne coniato il termine che deriva da "cibernetica" e "punk" coniato da Bruce Bethke come titolo per il suo racconto "Cyberpunk", del 1983.

Il cyberpunk tratta di scienze avanzate, associate ad un certo grado di ribellione o cambiamento radicale nell'ordine sociale. Tra gli esponenti più noti vengono comunemente indicati William Gibson, per i racconti e romanzi fortemente innovativi e caratteristici dal punto di vista stilistico e delle tematiche, e Bruce Sterling, per l'elaborazione teorica, che del  cyberpunk disse «è un nuovo tipo di integrazione. Il sovrapporsi di mondi che erano formalmente separati: il regno dell'high tech e il moderno pop underground».
Il Cyberpunk, tra i vari sottogeneri che lo compongono vede anche il "cyberpunk-fantasy" o "cyberfantasy" che consiste in un'opera di genere fantasy che attiene internet o in generale il cyberspazio.

Steampunk enthusiasts in the imaginay recalls mechanics, one that requires sweat, toil and steam, the one starring the mechanical engines, grease, gears, mechanical motion. Cyberpunk is a literary movement born in the '80s as a subgenre of science fiction. Although as the style was already conosciutocon Dozois, it was only in 1983 that was coined the term derived from "cybernetic" and "punk" was coined by Bruce Bethke as the title for his story "Cyberpunk," 1983.
The cyberpunk science is advanced, associated with some degree of rebellion or radical change in the social order. Seconda cosa da sapere sullo Steampunk

Altra precisazione fondamentale è che esistono dei sotto generi dello Steampunk, che sono moltissimi ma i principali possono essere riassunti in :

Lo Steamfantasy che vede la commistione di elementi fantasy in quelli prettamente fantasy, tendente più verso la fantascienza, qui siamo di fronte ad un mondo del tutto immaginario, fantasy, dove troviamo creature leggendarie e fantastiche che convivono con la tecnologia propriamente "steampunk".

 Lo Sandalpunk queste tipologie di romanzi implicano delle ambietazioni che vanno dalla civiltà classica greco - romana all'età medievale, dove troviamo una tecnologica avanzata nel 130 a.C. o a Camelot.

Ma quindi, tendenzialmente, quando ci troviamo innanzi allo stile Steampunk????

Più o meno, e non tassativamente, gli ingredienti* per la ricetta sono:

• Tecnologia anacronistica e avanzata basata sull’energia del vapore ...
• ... che porta dunque a preferire un Retrofuturismo ottocentesco;
• Fantascienza del periodo o anche il reale XIX secolo;
• Elementi fantasy;
