THE BROKEN EMPIRE

                                  PRINCE of THORNS
                                  Il Principe dei fulmini
                                                     di Mark Lawrence

                                                                            Newton & Compton 9.90 €  Uscita: 8 marzo 2012

Plot
When he was nine years old, Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath saw his mother and younger brother murdered before his eyes. By thirteen, he commanded a band of bloodthirsty mercenaries. By the time he is fifteen, he intends to be king. First though, Jorg must return to the life he turned his back on, to take what is rightfully his. Since the day he was hung on the thorns of a briar patch and forced to watch Count Renar's men slaughter his mother and brother, Jorg has been driven by a burning need for vengeance. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose. But treachery and dark magic awaits him in his father’s castle. No matter how fierce, can the will of one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

When I picked it up for the first time this novel was not exactly 100% because I believe thet it had - and has - a teenage boy as the protagonist and I must say that I feared belonged to the YA genre. Fortunately it is not.NOT - in my opinion - BE CONSIDERED THAT, also because scenes are pretty "heavy" and hard.
I have nothing against YA, some times he may even surprise positively, but basically, don't contain those atmospheres immersive and exciting, these conflicts and situations that push me to go beyond what we know and surprise, surprisng me; Furthermore, in general , with his kind of novels, I find myself with the last 100 pages disposed in a hurry to rush because in the first half part of the book all those beautiful premises slide inexorably towards the marshes of the predictable boredom-of-the-obvious without: tho! a final innovation.Having said what I say at once that I loved this novel. The plot looks like, if you will, to another series that I loved very much, of Brett Weeks. With "The Prince of thornes" we are faced with a killer, but not a killer  lurking in the deep (even just a little light) doubts about what he does, what it is and what they, perhaps, would be. And 'ruthless, is cruel, no remorse for what he does. He just act. A work simple and clean, with no consciousness (even dirty). Darker, harder, more violent and bloody, then Weeks heroes. Lawrence create a character unsettling, as the killers macabre, dark and violent that we see in the movie, truly c.r.u.e.l.Honestly the element that fascinated me most and bewildered at the same time (and perhaps the one that kept me glued to the novel) is the fact that all the crimes committed by Jorg Ancrath, his whole world and all psychology violent background that we know, belongs to a young boy, adolescente. If I don't know that Jorg is a fourteen year old, it seems to be dealing with a mature, adult, deep scared by life and by events. It's a teenager who has had its share of pain and ugliness, why you want revenge, but seems almost that this cruelty elment belong to his own  ...

  • Elementi che ho apprezzato principalmente/Elements that I liked mainly:

The way to write of Lawrence! Say that he writing very well, is really limited, especially if you think that is his literary debut, especially considering that the plot and the world that has been able to recreate.

Despite being part of a trilogy, it can be read alone, because it has a conclusion.

  • Elementi che ho apprezzato meno/Elements that I liked less:

The references - more or less express - to George R. Martin, bring the reader to compare this one to the novel in question, in particular for political mechanisms at the basis ...

Sometimes in the battle's description... I was lost (and a little bored?).

Overall I must say that it is really worth reading if you love the genre and do not disdain the "colors" strong, hard and dark in a fantasy novel.
