Tutto ha inizio dietro il proscenio...

... dietro le tende impolverati e pesanti del palcoscenico. 

Ma soprattutto,  

ha inizio dove iniziano i sogni, 

dove iniziano le passioni.

È da quando ha nove anni che Hannah Ward si dedica anima e corpo alla danza. E ora, che ne ha solo diciannove, è una delle ballerine più talentuose della prestigiosa Manhattan Ballet di New York. È perfetta, la sua tecnica è impeccabile e quando balla, con le sue flessuose braccia sembra dipingere l’aria. Danzare è la sua vita, il teatro è il suo mondo, diventare prima ballerina il suo sogno. Per realizzarlo ha sacrificato tutto: famiglia, vita privata, tempo libero. Ma quando incontra Jacob, un musicista affascinante e sicuro di sé, che le mostra che esiste una vita diversa e coinvolgente anche lontano dalle luci della ribalta, tutta la sua esistenza crolla. Vuole davvero continuare a combattere e a sopportare sacrifici, diete e competizione? O forse è arrivato il momento di scoprire cosa si nasconde oltre l’elegante sipario rosso? Hannah non sa se sarà capace di rompere la sua gabbia dorata e conquistare una vita normale. Lasciarsi andare infatti è molto difficile. Per riuscirci dovrà aprire il suo cuore e riscoprire quella parte di sé che aveva dimenticato durante la sua ostinata ricerca della perfezione.

Anche a costo di perdere tutto.

Danzare

è la sua vita.

Il teatro è

  Come anticipato poco sopra la storia narra la vita - autobiografica dell'autrice - di una ballerina di nome Hanna che sin dalla tenera età di 9 anni sogna di appartere al mondo del balletto. Ovviamente un pochino tutte sin da piccoline, che vogliamo ammetterlo o meno, abbiamo desiderato, chi con maggiore intensità chi meno, di poter infilarci un tutù tutto rosa confetto, le scarpette ( con le calze abbinate ) e volteggiare come piume sul palco inseguendo una musica che solo noi potevamo sentire! Hanna oltre a fantasticare va oltre e vuole, assecondata dai premurosi - anche se un pò scettici perchè apprensivi - genitori, farne una professione. Si trasferisce quindi nella Grande Mela e sin da piccolina incomincia a prendere lezioni di danza. Vive poco la città, come del resto quasi tutto,  perchè la danza è tutta la sua vita, sostanzialamente, tutto quello che della vita conosce. La ritroviamo, all'inizio del libro, cinque anni dopo, a carriera già avviata, con una voglia matta di fare progressi artistici, a volere parti più importanti, perchè è stufa di fare le stesse parti una stagione dopo l'altra, una mattina/pomeriggio/sera dopo l'altro.   

  Il libro ripercorre proprio quest'anno in particolare della vita di Hanna, quello del diciannovesimo compleanno - quello del cambiamento - vivendo con lei le quattro stagioni di cui è composto, iniziando con l'autunno e terminando in estate.  La conosciamo meglio mentre si destreggia abilmente tra trucchi e vestiti di scena; mentre chiacchera e scherza spensieratamente con le sue compagne - amiche e nemiche - mentre ci presenta le personalità e i rapporti che ha con ognuna di esse; ci propone la vita quotidiana che conduce, scandita da esercitazioni e lezioni fino allo stremo per rasentare la perfezione con il corpo, ed i problemi per mantenerla tale (con relativa anoressia e trucchi di biancheria intima); inoltre ci insegna a fare un "Bunheads" che è il nome della classica pettinatura da ballerina, che potete vedere anche qui a sotto,  simile ad uno chignon, delle ballerine.

Interludio: Se volete vedere come si fa un "Bun" direttamente dall'autrice guardate un qua: http://sf-feed.info/perfect-bun/video.html.                                                                                                                                                                             La vita di Hanna cambia inesorabilmente - ed inconsapevolmente - quando incontra un ragazzo in un bar, Jacob, un musicista simpatico, intelligente e premuroso in da cui non riesce a distogliere lo sguardo e che conquisterà istantaneamente il suo cuore. E' un momento fondamentale nella sua vita perchè si infatua per la prima volta di una ragazzo, ma soprattutto di qualcosa/qualcuno che non sia la danza o annesso ad essa. 

Si parlano tutta la sera, si lasciano il numero di telefono e quando Hanna torna a casa si rende conto che in qualche modo, qualcosa in lei è cambiato. E' un cambiamento importante perchè man mano si accorge che esiste qualcosa oltre il balletto, qualcosa che la interessa e che può piacerle in egual modo e che vuole poter conoscere, ma la danza richiede costanza e sacrificio e per l'intero arco del romanzo assistiamo alla scissione di Hanna.  Quella che appartiene al palcoscenico, che lotta e vive per esso, la parte ambiziosa, che vuole realizzarsi, che vuole superare le altre compagne, emergere su tutte, che vuole concretizzare e giustificare i sacrifici che ha compiuto fino a quel momento; e la Hanna che vuole conoscere cosa si nasconde al di là di del palco, al di là della prestigiosa e totalizzante "Manhattan Ballet" di New York, vuole vivere e conoscere il mondo che Jacob le propone e di cui la invoglia a farsi travolgere. Piano a piano, insinuatosi il dubbio di una vita diversa, più adatta alla nuova Hanna, più vicino a quello che vuole per lei,  Hanna si troverà a destreggiarsi tra un trinagolo amoroso, un'amicizia competitiva e l'amore per la danza. 

Entusiasmo vero e spassionato. 

E' quello che ho provato sfogliando soddisfatta l'ultima pagina (compresi i ringrazimenti) di questo libro. Sophie Flack ha descritto una storia che ha ovviamente sentito moltissimo, che le appartiene appieno, la narra avvolgendo chi legge in un nastro rosa confetto e  trascindolo/a nella sua personalissima visione della danza, ci immergiamo nei suoi panni, con la sua passione e la sua caparbietà. Lo fa in modo leggero, semplice, estemporaneo. Mi è piaciuto moltissimo come ha raccontato la sua storia bilanciando benissimo il lato più quotidiano della danza, quello che noi semplici spettatori ignari non comprendiamo fino in fondo e non riusciamo ad immaginarci dietro le quinte; e quello invece più interiore, duplice, complicato, normale e profondo di Hanna.

Il bello di questo libro è che permette ai profani del balletto classico di immergersi nella quotidianità di tutte quelle bambine, poi ragazze ed infine donne, che fin da piccolissime si sacrificano, affrancandosi dal mondo, come noi lo conosciamo, per faticare e sudare ogni singolo giorno davanti ad uno specchio che mostra loro una realtà filtrata della loro passione, ed indiscindibile dal loro tutù. Lo fanno ogni giorno, sistematicamente, per piegare i loro corpi in forme complesse e innaturali, in forme perfette e bellissime, a rievocare per il pubblico immagignifiche eroine e  sofferenti regali cigni, compiendo sforzi fisici e psicologici al limite delle loro possibilità, incomprensibili a noi, forse anche illogici. Mi è paciuto che qui venga descritta la vita e la scelta di una ballerina fuori dal coro, una ballerina che pur amando moltissimo la vita che ha sempre conosciuto ed amato sopra ogni cosa, inominci a volere qualcosa di diverso, proprio quando è più vicina a ciò per cui ha lavorato duramente.

Non vi svelerò il finale - anche se a metà probabilmente lo intuirete - perchè è bello arrivarci con Hanna, fare il suo percorso, conoscere e vivere le sue esperienze tramite i suoi occhi e partecipare alle scelte che compie piano piano.

In conclusione,

"Balla, sogna, ama" è un libro che mi sento di consigliare assolutamente a chi ama oltre misura il mondo della danza, a chi è affascinato/a da essa, ma è perfetto anche per chi ha delle curiosità piccole e grandi sul mondo che ruota del balletto e vuole togliersi lo sfizio di conoscerle, pur non essendo un amante spassionato/a di esso, senza contare che si vengono a conoscere moltissime "chicche" molto carine - che io personalmente ignoravo totalmente! Inoltre è  un libro leggero, scritto fluidamente e piacevolissimo!

                                 "Bunheads"

On stage, his life is a dream.
Behind the scenes, a nightmare
Everything starts behind the stage ...

    "It is nine years since Hannah Ward is devoted body and soul to dance. And now that it has only nineteen, is one of the most talented dancers from the prestigious Manhattan Ballet in New York. It is perfect and when he dances with her lithe arms seems to depict air. Dancing is her life, the theater is his world, his dream to become a prima ballerina. To accomplish this he sacrificed everything: family, private life, free time.   As mentioned just above the story about the life - the author's autobiographical - a dancer named Hanna that since the tender age of 9 years appartere dreams of the world of ballet. Obviously a tiny bit of all right, we want to admit it or not, we want, those with greater intensity than others, can all infilarci a tutu pink, shoes (with matching socks) and twirl like feathers on stage chasing a music only we could hear! Hanna goes further than to fantasize and wants, seconded by caring - although a little apprehensive because skeptics - parents, make it a profession. She then moved to the Big Apple, and since as a baby begins to take dance lessons. She lives just the city, like almost everything, because dancing is her life, everything in life knows. We find, at the beginning of the book, five years later, a career already started, with a fierce desire to make artistic progress, to want the most important parts, because they are tired of doing the same parties a season after another, one morning afternoon evening after another.
  The book covers just this year in particular the life of Hanna, that of nineteenth birthday - that of change - living with her four seasons it is made, beginning with the fall and ending in the summer. Know it better as deftly juggles between tricks and stage clothes, while blithely chats and jokes with her friends - friends and enemies - and introduces us to the personalities and the relationships she has with each of them, we propose that daily life brings, punctuated by exercises and lessons for up to the extreme verge on perfection with the body, and problems to keep this (relatively anorexia and tricks of underwear); also teaches us to do a "Bunheads" which is the name of the classic hairstyle dancer, you can see it here below, like a bun, the dancers.

Hanna's life changes inexorably - and unknowingly - when she meets a guy in a bar, Jacob, a musician friendly, intelligent and thoughtful in which he can not look away and you will win your heart instantly. It 'a defining moment in his life because one-sided infatuation for the first time a boy, but especially for something someone who is not dancing or attached to it.
We talk all night, you leave your phone number and when Hanna comes home he realizes that somehow, something about her has changed. It 'a major change because as he realizes that there is something beyond the ballet, something that interests you and that can please her in the same way and wants to know, but dance requires perseverance and sacrifice and for the entire span of the novel we see the division of Hanna. That which belongs to the stage, struggling and living for it, the ambitious, who wants to realize, that wants to overcome the other companions, emergence of all, who wants to clarify and justify the sacrifices he has made so far, and Hanna who wants to know what lies beyond the stage, beyond the prestigious all-encompassing "Manhattan Ballet" New York, wants to live and know the world that Jacob proposes and which makes you want to get carried away. Floor to floor, sneaking doubt of a different life, more suited to the new Hanna, closer to what she wants for her, Hanna will be to juggle a love triangle, friendship and love for the competitive dance.

                      Genuine enthusiasm and dispassionate.

That 's what I tried flipping the last page satisfied (including ringrazimenti) of this book. Sophie Flack described a story that has obviously heard a lot, which belongs to the full, tells the reader by wrapping a ribbon and candy pink and put him a in her personal vision of the dance, we immerse ourselves in his shoes, with his passion and her stubbornness. She does so lightweight, simple, impromptu. I loved how he told her story very well balancing the newspaper side of the dance, oblivious to what we mere spectators do not understand the way down and we can not imagine behind the scenes, and rather than inner, double, complex, normal Hanna and deep.
The beauty of this book is that it allows the layman to immerse themselves in daily ballet of all those girls, then girls and women, then, that from a very small sacrifice themselves, freeing themselves from the world as we know it, toil and sweat for every single day in front of a mirror that shows them a filtered reality of their passion, and indiscindibile their tutus. 

They do that every day, systematically, to bend their bodies into unnatural shapes, and complex in perfect and beautiful forms, alluding to the public immagignifiche suffering heroines and gifts swans, striving to physical and psychological limits of their possibilities, incomprehensible to us , perhaps even illogical. I like that the document describes the life and the choice of a dancer out of the choir, a dancer who while loving so much life he has always known and loved above all things,  to want something different, just as it was nearer what has worked so hard.
Do not reveal the ending - although probably in mid intuirete - because it's nice to get there with Hanna, make his path, knowing and living his experiences through his eyes and participate in decisions that performs slowly.

                In conclusion,

"Bunheads" is a book that I would recommend to those who absolutely loves to be in a far world of dance, who is fascinated in it, but it is also perfect for those of small and great curiosity about the world around ballet and wants to remove the "itch" to know, although not a dispassionate lover to it, not to mention that you come to know many "goodies" very nice - I personally totally ignored! It is also a book light, smoothly written and thoroughly enjoyed!
